Main Navigation Computer (Deckhouse Starboard Side)
The main navigation computer is placed in
the deckhouse, starboard side and is connected to one of
the two TFT screens, 18”,
on that side (the other is for the radar). It is a marinised
computer with shock protection for the hard disk.
The computer handles the chart system and produces a chart over
the actual area, which is output to screens in the deckhouse
and cockpit. The chart can also be seen on the plasma screens
(see entertainment chapter) at saloon, crew mess and aft deckhouse
and on one of the computer screens in the library. The chart
can have a radar overlay.
The computer is connected to the GPS, B&G
instruments, a Navtex receiver and the network. The computer
is dedicated to providing a position chart, calculate the
course and provide a computerised logbook.

Deckhouse Chart Desk (Port Side)
On the port side of the deckhouse at the forward desk is a similar
networked computer. Its main purpose is for navigation planning,
looking forward at the charts for the next days or weeks of sailing.
This means that we can plan ahead, while at the same time sailing,
and the helmsman can steer looking at his chart, while a navigator
is planning the nights anchorage or checking a suitable position
to tack. I often use it to plan the voyages ahead and the routes
can then be transferred to the Navigation Computer and used for
sailing.
The computer can also be used by guests as
a general computer for e.g. e-mails. It has a dedicated
18” TFT screen”.
Captain’s Office
In the captain’s office is the third computer (similar
specification) providing a possibility for the captain to plan
a voyage in private. It also holds the accounting and inventory
systems for the yacht. It has internet connections and can receive
weather information via internet. It can also receive weather
fax charts and Navtex reports via a radio receiver connected
to and controlled by the computer. It has a 18” TFT
screen.
Library
The fourth computer is in the library with
two 23” Sony
screens for Photoshop and video editing as well as normal
computer work. It has 2,000 Gb of hard disk capacity, a speed
of more than 3 GHz and special video cards for fast screen
redraw. One of the screens can alternatively receive information
from the main navigation computer.
Laptops
Laptops can be connected to the network on several places on
board including the main and aft cockpits, the deckhouses, the
master stateroom, the library and the crew mess.
Printers
The network is connected to 2 HP colour laser
printer/fax/copier/scanners, one in the captain’s
office and the other in the library.
The library also has
an Epson inkjet colour photo printer connected directly
to the library computer (not networked).
